Ribes are alternate-leaved deciduous shrubs- some with thorns, others without. The currant fruit reaches 1/4" in diameter, while gooseberry fruit is larger, reaching 1/2" in diameter. Both are bright red in color. The flowers are small and yellow in color in most species. They grow in height from 3-12'. Their berries are good for jams and juice and young leaves are generally eaten in salads.
